DENNIS ROBERTSON MSP CONDEMNS “ASTRONOMICAL” NEW TRIDENT TOTAL WHILE TAX CREDIT CUTS ARE PLANNED
Local MSP Dennis Robertson has condemned the latest estimates being reported for Trident replacement, which have dramatically risen to more than £167 billion.
The SNP MSP says that this ‘astronomical’ amount of money cannot be allowed to be spent on nuclear weapons that can never be used, especially when a fraction of the amount would cover the cost of welfare and tax credit changes which are hitting the poor and working families.
Commenting, Dennis Robertson said:
“This is an incredible amount of money to be spending on a nuclear weapons system that is neither needed nor usable. Thousands of people in Aberdeenshire West are already suffering the consequences of Tory welfare and tax credit changes and this is simply adding to their burden.
“At a time when Scotland’s conventional defence capabilities have shrunk dramatically with base closures and less than 10,000 personnel it is all the more alarming that there seems to be an endless amounts of money available for abhorrent nuclear weapons.
“The UK Government’s choice to spend £167 billion for four new Trident submarines while cutting vital programs such as those that support disabled people demonstrates its priority to choose weapons of mass destruction over people. This is an unacceptable.”
